Promoting wellbeing through circus
Circus of Positivity
Circus of Positivity CIC is a not-for-profit group based in Newport, South Wales. We aim to promote physical and mental wellbeing in our local community through the provision of juggling and ground-based circus activities.
Many of our directors and volunteers have personal experience of the huge impact circus can have on wellbeing. We have a strong focus on wellbeing and creative expression and provide opportunities for workshop and event attendees to learn circus skills in a relaxed social setting, where every achievement, big or small, is celebrated, and mistakes and setbacks are regarded as nothing but opportunities to learn and support one another.
What our workshops participants say about Circus of Positivity
“A brilliant 2 hours trying something new and meeting many people. It has done my wellbeing no end of good through laughter.”
“It’s refreshing when you can try something new and still laugh and have fun even if you fail!”
“This kind of activity is rare and great for the whole family on many levels. We really enjoyed it. Thank you.”
“The fact that the workshop was free for us to attend was hugely appreciated. My daughter really enjoyed the session. The instructors were lovely people, very friendly and helpful which made the session really enjoyable.”
LED Night
November
LED Night is our annual bonfire night alternative event. The event is aimed at those who struggle with typical bonfire night celebrations—for example, due to anxiety or sensitivity to loud noises—and are looking for a more relaxed alternative.
Every November, our volunteers light up the night by demonstrating circus skills with LED equipment. We are always looking for ways to develop this event and find new ways for our workshop attendees and community to get involved!
Look out for updates on this year’s event on our Facebook page.
"We came last year and had a great time. It's something different, you don't usually get alternative events but it's something for all the family to enjoy."
“My little girl has selective mutism and is very anxious. She doesn’t like loud noises but she likes the lights. The sensory element is really good for her and she’s not had any meltdowns. It’s ideal.”
“Thank you so much for inviting us to join you at this. It was such an amazing experience and a wonderful event.”

Circus is for everyone
Sight Life
As part of a grant from Postcode Community Trust, we recently provided workshops for Sight Life, an organisation providing services for blind and partially sighted people in South Wales. During the workshops, we tailored our activities so that their members could try skills such as plate spinning, flower stick, poi, balance board and tightwire. Here’s what some of their members had to say after our visits.
“We had such a fun time! It was very good, very enjoyable. The circus staff were ever so friendly and very patient. I pushed myself and managed to walk the tight rope which is something I never thought I would ever get the chance to do, least of all since I lost my sight!”
“What a delightful and fun time we had! I really enjoyed trying new things like juggling and spinning plates. I’ve had to give up a lot of my favourite things that made me happy since I lost my sight, but I had so much fun at the circus skills workshop I feel inspired!”
“I can see why it’s called Circus of Positivity—nothing but friendly fun and positive vibes! I haven’t laughed at myself so much in ages!”
